Although the exam is known for being hard, with enough test prep anyone can pass the test.
What comes next, depends on where you live. Let’s check it out.
What Happens If You Fail?
Alabama: The student can retake the exam as many times as they need to as long as it is within the one year time limit. However, there is a fee of $71 each time you retake the exam.
Alaska: There is no limit to how many times you can retake the test. They do specify that you should wait 24 hours before trying to take it again. There is also a $100 fee for each time you take the exam.
Arizona: You can retake the exam withing the six month period of purchasing your course.
Arkansas: You have to pay a $75 fee in order to try again and you have one year to pass the exam.
California: You have to wait 18 calendar day before you are able to retake the exam. If you fail the re-examination then you have to take the course over and wait 18 more calendar days.
Colorado: You are able to retake the test but there will be a $80 charge.
Connecticut: You cannot retake the exam the same day but can
Delaware: You only have to retake the portion of the exam that you failed. If the candidate cannot pass both parts in three or less attempts then you must retake the pre-licensing course.
Florida: If you fail three times you must pay again and retake the exam again.
Georgia: TREC allows you to take 3 attempts in order to pass the exam. If you fail one portion then you only have to retake the portion you failed.
Hawaii: Candidates have to retake the failed section and pay a $61 charge for the examination.
Idaho: In Idaho, you only have to retake the portion of the exam that you failed as many times as you want. If you do not pass the section in one year then you have to retake both portions again.
Illinois: You have three attempts to retake the exam which is a total of four times. If you fail either section more than four times, then you have to retake the whole course that is required to take the exam.
Indiana: In Indiana, you only have to retake the part of the test that you failed and have only one year to pass.
Iowa: If you fail, you have to submit a new registration form, pay the appropriate fee, and schedule an appointment in order to retake the exam.
Kansas: Candidates only have to retake the portion of the exam that you failed. However, you have to pass the failed portion in time for the Kansas Real Estate Commission.
Kentucky: If a student fails the exam has to repeat the entire course, for one time, at no charge as long as the course hasn’t expired. If the course has expired then you have to pay the full tuition.
Louisiana: In Louisiana, there is a 90-day time limit in order to retake any portion and the fee is $15 in order to receive a retake authorization from the Louisiana Real Estate Commission.
Maine: You only have to retake the portion that you failed, as long as it is before the expiration date of the Course Completion Certificate.
Maryland: You are not able to retake the exam the same day but you can retake the part of the exam that you failed on a later appointed date.
Massachusetts: Candidates who pass only one portion of the examination and fail the other can retake the failed portion. The failed portion has to be passed within two years of the Education Certificate Form.
Michigan: You have to schedule a new exam through the PSI and pay the charge of $79.
Minnesota: Applicants can retake the portion that they failed on the exam.
Nebraska: In order to retake the exam, you have to reapply through the Nebraska Real Estate Commission. You will have to wait until the next day to reschedule for the failed part.
Nevada: Candidates are able to retake the examination as many times as you need. The examination fee is $100 and the candidate can retake for failed section and they have one year to pass.
New Hampshire: If you fail either of the National or the New Hampshire specific sections then you have to retake that section.
New Jersey: If you fail the exam then you have to reschedule an appointment in 24 hours and pay the fee of $35.
New Mexico: If you fail one section then you have to re-register in order to retake the exam and pay an additional $95 and pass the section within 90 days.
New York: You have three attempts to retake the exam and it is $25 for any attempt after the third attempt.
North Carolina: Candidates who fail have to reapply and reschedule. The fee is $164 and have to wait at least 10 days after the most recent testing date.
North Dakota: If you do not pass one section then you have to retake that section within one year.
Ohio: Candidates who fail one of the sections must submit a retake application and pay the respectable fee to the Division.
Oklahoma: There is no limit to how many times you can retake the state exam. However, each time you take the exam you will have to pay the exam fee each time.
Oregon: If you fail the exam, the candidate has to retake the exam after rescheduling and paying an additional fee to the PSI.
Pennsylvania: If you do not state the exam, you have to reschedule another attempt and you have to pay an additional fee of $49.
Rhode Island: Anyone that only fails one portion of the exam can retake that portion and pass within one year. If you do not pass by the time of the deadline then you will have to retake both sections.
South Carolina: You have to retake the examination as many times you need to within a one year period.
South Dakota: You need to re-register the portions that you did not pass.
Tennessee: Any candidate that passes on section and not the other, needs to retake only the section that you did not pass.
Texas: TREC allows 3 attempts in order to pass the exam. If you fail one portion then you only have to retake that portion.
Utah: Candidates who pass one portion of the exam and fail then they only have six months to pass that section. If, after the six months the candidate has to retake the whole examination.
Vermont: If you fail the exam, then you will have to start a new application in order to retake the exam. You will be able to retake the exam at the next scheduled date as long as you submit a timely application and pay the appropriate fee.
Virginia: If you fail any portion of the test, then you have to retake the part that you failed. The application must be completed within one year from the original exam date when you first took the test.
Washington: When you fail the test, you will be given a score report showing your score and the reapplication instructions. You have six months to pass the portion that you failed.
West Virginia: You only have two attempts to retake the exam.
Wisconsin: Candidates who fail the examination has to retake the exam section that they fired.
Wyoming: You have to re-register by contacting the PSI or by sending in a new registration form. IF you only passed one section, then you have to retake the sections that you failed. However, you only have six months to pass the section that you once failed. If you do not pass within the six months, then you will be required to retake both examinations.
